The concert is presented by Musical Bridges for Instruments Beyond Borders. Their discoveries were fashioned into makeshift musical instruments, which are featured by the Recycled Orchestra.
The doc, Landfill Harmonic, focused on families in South America, combing through landfills. The Recycled Orchestra Ensemble, which is the subject of a praised documentary film, return to Vancouver to play the Playhouse on May 29. As such, Playland is beguiling and, like Three Imaginary Boys, creates a platform that can be a springboard. It soon becomes apparent that this record isn’t about technical skill but creating a sound that works. The women play with a purposeful expediency with signature (and repetitive) single string guitar lines and efficient drumming. Playland is a little more sophisticated and the production denser but not by much. That 1979 first album was distinguished by a sparse simplicity and an effective primitiveness. It probably says more about the Garage than Supermoon but it’s hard to listen to its Playland EP and not think of The Cure’s Three Imaginary Boys debut.
